Ardnahoe is the ninth distillery on Islay. It is located just north of Port Askaig, between the Sound of Islay and Loch Ardnahoe (the water source). The name comes from the Gaelic and means “height of the pit”. Independent Bottler Hunter Laing is the owner. Plans for the distillery were approved in September 2016. Construction began shortly after and was completed in late 2018. The first spirit flowed from the stills on 14 October 2018. The distillery is notable for being the only distillery on Islay to have worm tub condensers and also the longest lyne arms in Scotland. Ardnahoe has four Oregon pine washbacks with a capacity of 25,000 litres. The wash still has a capacity of 12,500 litres and the spirit still is 9,500 litres. The malt comes from Port Ellen Maltings and is peated to 40 ppm. Fermentation takes sixty to seventy hours. The distillery has a capacity of approximately 900,000 liters of pure alcohol per year.
