Barón de Ley was founded in 1985 by a team of experienced
wine professionals from Rioja who wanted to set up a new type of winery, with a
completely new approach for the region. The former monastery with 90 hectares
of land offered them the opportunity to make wines from grapes from their own vineyards.
Special, because in Rioja most vineyards are still in the hands of
grape growers who sell their grapes to the wineries. Barón de Ley is
famous for its Reserva wines: powerful, concentrated and complex, but
also fruit-dominated and therefore attractive to a wide group of
wine drinkers. With native grapes such as garnacha, graciano, maturana and
garnacha blanca in addition to tempranillo, Barón de Ley remains true to its roots, but
expands the possibilities for making new, distinctive wines.
The wines of Barón de Ley are 100% Rioja, but each one has a
contemporary character.
CLIMATE & TERROIR: The garnacha blanca is picked on the
Los Almendros estate in Ausejo. This vineyard (450m) has a
limy soil. The tempranillo blanco comes from higher vineyards with sandy soils and a cooler climate.
VINIFICATION: The wine is fermented in concrete vats and then
matured for about 6 months on the yeast cells (sobre lías) in a
combination of concrete tanks and French oak barrels.
GRAPES: garnacha blanca, tempranillo blanco
ALCOHOL PERCENTAGE: 12.50%
NOISE & TASTE: The complex and inviting nose shows white
flowers and ripe yellow apple with a hint of balsamic. The wine
has a slightly creamy texture.
SERVING SUGGESTION: A versatile wine, ideal with rice dishes
with a light flavour, pasta with seafood and fish. FACT: The vineyard where Tempranillo Blanco is grown, Finca Carbonera, is the highest vineyard in the DOCa Rioja (700-950m altitude).
