Angelo Gaja (1940) is a household name in the wine world. His insights have been invaluable to Italy as a wine country and to Piemonte in particular. His entry into the family business in 1961, after internships in France and California, marked the start of a startling series of innovations. Gaja rigorously limited harvest yields, introduced the use of barriques and planted 'foreign' grape varieties for the region. In 1996, Gaja expanded to Tuscany, where he acquired the Ca'Marcanda wine estate. Here too he worked with unlimited energy on wines that have hardly any equal in Italy. Meanwhile, Gaja's daughters Gaia and Rosanna also play an (increasingly important) role in the company.
