When the first Moluccans arrived in the Netherlands in 1951, good housing had not yet been arranged. The Moluccans were then housed in former Jewish camps, also known as Barracks. Here in the Barracks, in 1951, the Moluccans first came into contact with the Dutch pearl, Jenever. It was here where they filled the first jars with gin, and added their own herbs, this was tastier and gave them a feeling/taste of their home.
