Barón de Ley was founded in 1985 by a team of experienced
wine professionals from Rioja who wanted to set up a new type of winery, with a
completely new approach for the region. The former monastery with 90 hectares
of land offered them the opportunity to make wines from grapes from their own vineyards.
Special, because in Rioja most vineyards are still in the hands of
grape growers who sell their grapes to the wineries. Barón de Ley is
famous for its Reserva wines: powerful, concentrated and complex, but
also fruit-dominated and therefore attractive to a wide group of
wine drinkers. With native grapes such as garnacha, graciano, maturana and
garnacha blanca in addition to tempranillo, Barón de Ley remains true to its roots, but
expands the possibilities for making new, distinctive wines.
The wines of Barón de Ley are 100% Rioja, but each one has a
contemporary character.
CLIMATE & TERROIR: The climate is temperate, with influences
from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
VINIFICATION: After fermentation, the wine matures for 24 months in
barriques of American (50%) and French (50%) oak. This is followed by
an additional 3 years of maturation in the bottle.
GRAPES: tempranillo
ALCOHOL PERCENTAGE: 14.00%
NOIS & TASTE: Complex ruby red wine with garnet
reflections. Aromatic with ripe red and dark fruit and well
integrated oak, spices, leather and tobacco. The taste is
full/round but fresh and lively and has a long aftertaste with
dried fruit & toast.
SERVING SUGGESTION: Serve with grilled red meat, leg of lamb,
roasted pork ribs, game such as venison or hare saddle and mature
(blue mould) cheeses. FACT: The vineyard of these grapes, Cenicero, is located in the Rioja
Alta protected from the cold winds of the Sierra
Cantabria and Oberenes mountains. These are ideal conditions that are expressed in the freshness and elegance of this Gran Reserva.
