The grapes of the Finca Monteviejo come from 60 year old vines of the vineyard of the same name. These high altitude vineyards are 95% planted with tempranillo, supplemented with graciano and garnacha. In the days before the harvest, the grapes undergo an extensive selection in the vineyard, during which affected grapes and unripe bunches are removed. Due to the old age of the vines, they have a naturally low yield. After the manual harvest of the ripe grapes, a long period of skin maceration follows to extract as much aroma, colour and tannins as possible from the skins. The wine matures for 18 months in new barrels of fine oak from the Allier and the Vosges. The wine is intense in colour, aroma and flavour. On the nose it has seductive aromas of ripe dark red blackberries, cherries, sweet dried fruit such as figs and apricots, some custard and nutmeg. Full and soft in taste with fine wood tones and a thick taste of fruit, sweet tannins and spices and some tones of candied cherries and plums. Despite its power, the wine is elegant and harmonious with a nice acidity, a good structure and a nice length.

The great-grandfather of the current owner (Juan Pablo de Simon), Marques de la Solana started producing wines in the middle of the 19th century according to the Bordeaux method (only grapes from their own vineyard and small wooden barrels). Even then, the wines were sold in bottles to selected customers in Spain, Cuba and France. To this day, this Bodegas still only uses grapes from their own vineyard, which can be called a rarity. Jaime, the son of Juan Pablo, the fifth generation, has recently entered the company and is in many ways like his father. The only thing that matters to them is caring for the land, making the wines and the extremely difficult task of assembling the 2500 barrels that are there. They actually want nothing to do with commerce. They are known to be a dying breed. Perhaps that is the unique character that Valserrano wines themselves have? The surface of the vineyard area of Bodegas de la Marquesa now covers approximately 65 hectares located at an altitude of between 450-500 meters. Half of it is located close to the bodega and is divided into 3 parts: 12 hectares, to the north, has quite a lot of lime in the soil with some clay. In the past, mainly white grapes were grown here, because the soil type is perfectly suited for it. 17 hectares are located higher up on a plateau behind the village. Here you will find more sand, and a part (4 hectares) is protected by a forest of pine trees that was originally planted by Juan Pablo's father for the production of wooden boxes. Finca Monteviejo is made from this vineyard, a top Rioja with a unique character
