The commune of Volnay only produces red wines. There is no Grand Cru but 26 premier crus. The vineyard is supported by an extremely fine subsoil composed of limestone marl from the Aargau and, in the bordering part of Pommard and Meursault, on clay-limestone scree from the Bathonian. There is also a lot of calcium. "Les Santenots" rests on a limestone soil of red earth, on sloping or flat ground depending on the sector.
