Pineau des Charentes is a fortified wine that was discovered by chance hundreds of years ago when a winemaker put his wine in a barrel and discovered years later that the wine tasted different than expected. The barrel used turned out to contain a remnant of cognac that provided the special taste. The product has been further developed over the centuries and has been subject to strict regulations since 1945. The Pineau that we offer comes from the crème de la crème area of Cognac, namely the Grande Champagne part. The house of François Peyrot also makes beautiful cognacs. To make the Pineau des Charentes, eau de vie from the cognac distillate, 60% alcohol, is added to grape juice after which it matures for five years in oak barrels. The wines have a syrupy and sweet character, with the white being slightly sweeter and the red being slightly fresher. It drinks a bit lighter than Port and this drink can also be combined well with cheese boards and fresh desserts. The drink also works very well as an aperitif. The wine is drunk cold, from the refrigerator, and importantly the taste of the drink remains unchanged for months after opening.
