The grapes for this wine come from a twenty-hectare vineyard planted with vines that are on average sixty years old, in the village of El Villar de Arnedo (Rioja Baja). The yield per hectare is exceptionally low at 1500 kilos and the selection during the harvest is therefore very strict. Four different wines are made, each of which is matured separately. The first wine is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha Blanca, Viura and Malvasía. The other wines are varietals of Garnacha Tinta, Graciano and Mazuelo. With the exception of the Garnacha wine, all wines undergo a three-year maturation in American oak barrels; the Garnacha goes into American oak. After three years, the winemakers at Barón de Ley assemble the four wines, transfer the mixture to a 10,000-liter French oak cask and bottle the final result eighteen months later with a grape composition in the ratio of 55% Tempranillo, 15% Graciano, 7% Garnacha, 5% Mazuelo, 5% Viura, 2% Malvasía and 1% Garnacha Blanca. The wine is then deep dark purple with a light edge. It smells and tastes of sweet berries, violets and rose petals. In the background, the seductive notes of vanilla, herbs and cedar wood give the balanced whole its high-quality complexity. Supported by a sweet tannin structure thanks to beautiful ripe fruits and an impressive aftertaste, this is one of the most beautiful wines of the Iberian Peninsula. Enjoy with your very best friends, with grilled lamb or hard cheeses. CLIMATE & TERROIR: The climate is temperate, with influences from both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
VINIFICATION: With the exception of the Garnacha, all separately
vinified wines mature for 3 years in American oak barrels. After
assembly, the wine matures for another 12 months in 10,000-litre
foeders of French oak.
