The Valserrano Gran Reserva is only produced in exceptionally good years, and in very limited editions. The wine is made from the strictly selected grapes from the oldest plots and matures for approximately 30 months in American and French oak barrels. After the first year in new wood, the wine is transferred to older barrels. The Gran Reserva is surprisingly young in colour, aroma and taste even at an older age. This wine can easily be kept for 15-20 years. When drunk “young” - the wine is only marketed after 7 years - the Gran Reserva is a powerhouse without being tiring. Like all other Valserrano wines, the Gran Reserva has pronounced aromas of sun-ripened fruit, but more of the candied kind. The fruit aromas are complemented by notes of tobacco, leather, herbs, wood, butter, plums and cocoa. The finish is long, round and complex with soft tannins and a beautiful freshness. A great and complex wine, which if given the time is more than worth its money.

The great-grandfather of the current owner (Juan Pablo de Simon), Marques de la Solana, began producing wines in the Bordeaux method (only grapes from their own vineyard and small wooden barrels) in the mid-19th century. Even then, the wines were sold in bottles to selected customers in Spain, Cuba and France. To this day, this Bodegas still only uses grapes from their own vineyard, which can be called a rarity. Jaime, the son of Juan Pablo, the fifth generation, has recently entered the business and is in many ways like his father. The only thing that matters to them is caring for the land, making the wines and the extremely difficult task of assembling the 2,500 barrels that are there. They don't really want to know anything about commerce. They know that they belong to a dying breed. Perhaps that is the unique character that the Valserrano wines themselves also have? The surface of the vineyard area of Bodegas de la Marquesa today covers approximately 65 hectares located at an altitude of between 450-500 meters. Half of it is located close to the bodega and is divided into 3 parts: 12 hectares, to the north, has quite a lot of lime in the soil with some clay. In the past, mainly white grapes were grown here, because the soil type is perfectly suited for it. 17 hectares are located higher up on a plateau behind the village. Here you will find more sand, and a part (4 hectares) is protected by a forest of pine trees that was originally planted by Juan Pablo's father for the production of wooden boxes. Finca Monteviejo is made from this vineyard, a top Rioja with a unique character
