The Viura and Malvasia grapes grow in the highest parts of the vineyards, with poor soil, good ventilation by the wind and a favourable position in relation to the sun. This allows the grapes to ripen slowly and to fully develop their aromas. After the manual harvest, the grapes are gently pressed and the juice is transferred to new ‘Allier’ barrels, where fermentation takes place and the wine then matures on the lees (dead yeast cells) for 28 months. This gives the wine a soft, round and complex character. The wine is at its best when opened well before consumption and not served too cold. Round, soft and intense in aroma and taste, with a pleasant, lively freshness and a striking minerality. Already beautiful to drink now, but in the coming years the wine will develop more complexity and refinement.

Wine description Producer Region Wine-Food
The great-grandfather of the current owner (Juan Pablo de Simon), Marques de la Solana, began producing wines in the mid-19th century according to the Bordeaux method (only grapes from their own vineyard and small wooden barrels). Even then, the wines were sold in bottles to selected customers in Spain, Cuba and France. To this day, this Bodegas still only uses grapes from their own vineyard, which can be called a rarity. Jaime, the son of Juan Pablo, the fifth generation, has recently entered the company and is in many ways like his father. The only thing that matters to them is caring for the land, making the wines and the extremely difficult task of assembling the 2500 barrels that are there. They actually want nothing to do with commerce. They know that they belong to a dying breed. Perhaps that is the unique character that the Valserrano wines themselves also have? The surface of the vineyard area of Bodegas de la Marquesa today covers approximately 65 hectares located at an altitude of between 450-500 meters. Half of it is located close to the bodega and is divided into 3 parts: 12 hectares, to the north, has quite a lot of lime in the soil with some clay. In the past, mainly white grapes were grown here, because the soil type is perfectly suited for it. 17 hectares are located higher up on a plateau behind the village. Here you will find more sand, and a part (4 hectares) is protected by a forest of pine trees that was originally planted by Juan Pablo's father for the production of wooden boxes. Finca Monteviejo is made from this vineyard, a top Rioja with a unique character
